2nd Round of Telephone Service Interruptions for Maintenance Upgrade

[Creation Date: 09-Jul-04]

Campus administrative telephone service will again be interrupted 5 p.m. Friday for up to four hours. Some features such as call forwarding will also be affected.

The interruption and service changes are required in order to upgrade the telephone system. Computer networks and emergency help phones will not be affected; resident student and resident staff telephones should not be affected.

If unforeseen difficulties arise, the interruption could last longer than four hours. University employees are asked to plan accordingly for this inconvenience.

For more information about the interruption, please log on to the Telecommunication Services Web site http://telecom.oit.umass.edu/. Additional questions about service interruptions can be answered by the Telecom Customer Service Office at 5-2171, or by sending an email to phoneservice@oit.umass.edu.

Friday's upgrade will create some visual differences for users with display telephones, will cancel some user-programmed data, and will change the way in which "Mobility" is managed.

VISUAL DIFFERENCES

Users with display telephones will notice that letters in the display are now in upper and lower case. Users who have "Personal Number" profiles may notice "PROF 1" in the lower corner of the display.

USER-PROGRAMMED DATA

Users who have activated a call-forward "follow-me" or an "external call forward" will have to re program these diversions after the upgrade. Additionally, any speed dial keys that were programmed by the user after June 16 will have to be re programmed. Finally, the upgrade will cancel existing "last number dialed" information. Please log on to the Telecom Web site at http://telecom.oit.umass.edu/services/phone_features.cfm for instructions on how to re program these features.

MOBILITY

The "Mobility" service is being replaced by something called "Personal Number," which essentially provides the same service as "Mobility" but implements it differently. For example, "Personal Number" provides a new Web interface through which users can access their profiles. The URL for the Web interface will be available from Telecom Customer Service on Monday. In addition, Telecom will automatically transfer existing user profiles to the new system as part of the upgrade process.
