Telephone Features

Using your own touch tone telephone, you can learn how to access all of the features of the telephone system.

Hold

To place a call on hold, briefly press and release the switch hook (hang up button).

To remove a call from hold, press [2], [2]; when you hear the oscillating tone, press [2].

Call Park

If you place a call on hold, you can pick up the call from any residential telephone.

  1. Press and release the switch hook (hang up button).
  2. Hang up, go to another residential telephone, and dial your number.
  3. You will receive a busy signal. Press [8] to retrieve the call.

Transfer

Calls can be transferred from one residential telephone to another. For example, if a call comes in for you when you are in a friend's room, the person who answers your telephone can transfer the call to the room where you are.

To transfer a call, with a party on the line:

  1. Press and release the switch hook (hang up button).
  2. Dial a second party.
  3. Hang up, and your call will be transferred.

Conference

Conference allows you to initiate a conference call with up to eight parties (three of whom can be off-campus). A single beep is heard whenever a member enters or leaves the conference.

To initiate a conference call:

  1. With the first party on the line, press and release the switch hook (hang up button).
  2. Dial the second party.
  3. After the second party has answered, press [3] to start your conference call.

To add additional parties to your conference call:

  1. Press and release the switch hook (hang up button).
  2. Dial the additional party. After the party has answered, press [3].
  3. Repeat this procedure for each additional party you want to add.

Note: The originating caller will be charged for all long distance fees. Be sure to confirm the exit of the long distance parties from the conference before you hang up. If the long distance parties continue the conference without you, you will be charged for the call even after you exit the conference.

Call Waiting

If you are calling from your residence hall telephone to another on-campus residence hall room and receive a busy signal, press [5] to generate a call waiting tone to the other party.

If you are on the telephone and receive a call waiting tone:

  1. Press the switch hook (hang up button) to place the current call on hold and to be connected to the new call.
  2. When you have finished with the new call, press [2] to return to the original call. You can also press [2] to switch between calls.

Last Number Redial (Off-campus)

To redial the last off-campus number dialed, press [*], [*], [*].

Automatic Callback

If a campus telephone is busy or does not answer, you can request a callback when the phone is available or the receiver is picked up. The feature is automatically canceled after 20 minutes if the phone does not become available.

When you want to activate a callback because a line is busy or if the party doesn't answer:

  1. Press [6].
  2. Wait for the confirmation beep.
  3. Hang up.

When the line is available, you will hear a fast interrupted ring if your phone line is not in use. You must answer before the ringing stops (8 seconds). When you lift the handset, the phone you called will be ringing with your call.

To cancel all callbacks, press [#], [6], [#], then hang up.

To cancel one callback, press [#],[6], [*], the number, [#].

Call Diversion

Call diversion allows you to select a temporary alternate phone to receive your calls. You can use this feature if you are going to be in another room and are expecting an important call.

Please check with your roommate(s) before diverting calls because you cannot selectively divert calls. When you activate this function, all calls will be diverted. The original diversion command can be activated only from your phone. Once activated, the alternate phone number can be changed from the alternate phone.

To activate call diversion:

  1. Press [*], [2], [*], the alternate phone number, [#].
  2. After the pulsating dial tone, hang up.

To change the alternate phone number from the alternate phone:
Press [*], [2], [*], your phone number, [*], the new alternate phone number, [#].

To cancel from your telephone:

  1. Press [#], [2], [#].
  2. Listen for dial tone, then hang up.

To cancel from the alternate phone:

  1. Press [#], [2], [*], your phone number, [#].
  2. Listen for dial tone, then hang up.

Distinctive Ringing

The telephone system provides a unique pattern of ringing that identifies three types of incoming calls:

Single ring: On-campus call
Double ring: Off-campus call
Interrupted fast ring: Callback
